Sven Gets The Boot

See, this is the trouble with all these new owners who come swanning into the Premier League, chucking cash about and buying football clubs. Some of them are great – but some of them don't really know what they're taking on, or what they're on about.
Take Thaksinthingymajig at Manchester City. Thaksin Shinawatra or Frank Sinatra, or whatever he likes to call himself. He clearly has no real appreciation of what it takes to manage City if today's rumours of him sacking Sven-Goran Eriksson at the end of the season are true. How can he?
True, City have tailed off badly since the New Year, but Thaksin needs to get the history books out. He doesn't own one of the biggest clubs in the country, he owns a club which has a modest recent record in the Premier League. Throwing bundles of cash Sven's way isn't the total answer. It's one way forward, but not the only way forward; Sven bought some good players in the summer and City made an electrifying start to the season until injuries ravaged his squad. His entire first-choice defence is more or less sidelined at the moment; any coach would struggle with that.
But even so, City are still set for a satisfying season. With two games to go, they sit 9th and can't finish any lower than that; they could actually, though it's unlikely, end up as high as 6th.
Know where City finished last season? 14th, four points ahead of relegated Sheffield United. They were 15th the season before that, 16th two seasons before that, 18th in 2000-01. Get the picture? In fact, their highest league finish in the past ten years was 8th in 2004-05 – City had 52 points. Already, they have 55 points this season.
So, effectively, the club owner has decided to sack the manager who has guided Manchester City to their best-ever league performance in well over a decade. Good work, Thaksin. A good luck finding a coach with as much talent as Eriksson. It might not be that easy.
