Mechanics And Meddlers
A bloke´s car overheated on the motorway last week and he´s just received a quote from the garage to get it fixed. They want three grand. Like many car owners he needs it because the local bus service is pony. In fact, if the bus was a pony it wouldn´t be so bad.
But most of all he uses it to visit his two year old son and to take him to fun places and he can´t put a price on that. He needs that car sorted. The garage know that he won´t be able to buy another car like it for 3k. He will find the cash from somewhere and the mechanics will be swimming in lager.
This week Manchester United have slapped an 80 million price tag on Cristiano Ronaldo to warn off wealthy Real Madrid. And it will work because Madrid don´t want him enough.
The meddling money men at Madrid, like many Spanish men, are vainglorious, full of machismo and image conscious. At every turn through this whole transfer saga we hear sound bites like "when Real want a player they get their man… blah… blah…"
But the bottom line is that they don´t want him enough. If they did 80 million would be no stumbling block to the richest club in the world. You are only as good as your last game and Ronaldo was distinctly average at Euro 2008.
And anyway, only fools would pay that kind of money for a player who´s best matches come against teams like Portsmouth and Wigan. He barely registered during Portugal´s summer campaign and his missed penalty for United in the Champions League almost cost them dear.
Ronaldo will be a Manchester United player next season and I will be off to the beach with my little boy.
