Fergie's Brucie Bonus

 Alex Ferguson's Brucie Bonus

The conspiracy theories have already started. Man United can win the Premier League title on Sunday afternoon if they beat Wigan, a team managed by Steve Bruce. Yep, that's right – the Steve Bruce who not only used to play for United but also captained them for several years and was pretty much Alex Ferguson's on-pitch leader in that time.

A tanked-up punter in my local summed up the situation neatly yesterday. "There's no way," he spluttered, raising his pint glass and standing in front of the large-screen TV showing the Newcastle-Chelsea match, blocking everyone's view, "that old Stevie Bruce is gonna let United lose the title. No way! No way! There's no point even watching this game!"

Now, clearly hammered though he was at 5pm, this fella had a point. What a wonderful situation for United to be in. Yes, they'd have wanted the title won by now, but there are worse things than needing to beat Wigan to win the championship. Especially a Wigan team that, thanks to their 2-0 win at Villa last weekend, have already successfully avoided the drop and can afford to take their foot off the pedal. United could have been facing a team hell-bent on scrapping for every single tackle, playing as if their top-flight status depended on it. Instead, they'll be facing a team with really not that much to play for. And that slight difference can make all the difference.

There's no suggestion from us (we did tell the lashed-up punter to sit down and shut up, albeit quietly) that Bruce will simply lie down and let United walk all over Wigan, but there's bound to be matey handshakes before the game between the two managers, and very possibly talk of sharing a bottle of wine afterwards.
