Come On Germany!

 Ballack: Come on Germany!

Sometimes, a man has to have some principles and stand up for what he believes in. And now that time has come for me to defiantly shake my fist in support of the much-maligned German football team. I can't take it anymore, and something has to be done.

If I hear one more football TV pundit mutter about 'lucky Germany' or 'you can never write off the Germans' or 'Germany haven't played well but they keep winning', I swear I'll put my feet and fists through my 30inch flat screen and batter it into a pulp of wires. It's a load of rubbish. The reason you can't write off the Germans is that they're a good team. Not lucky, just good. End of.

They didn't play well against Croatia in the group stages. Fair enough. But then, Croatia are a good side, so no shame there. But what about that quarter-final win against fancy-pants Portugal? Face it, Germany ran the game. They won 3-2, but were never in danger of losing the game, never behind. They bossed Ronaldo's boys.

Then on to the semis, and the miracle makers of Turkey, who started strongly. But credit to the Germans again, they bounced back and scored three goals to win. The crucial goal came from a full-back who was still bombing forward in the last minute! Fully deserved, I'd say.

How can the pundits and the experts turn their noses up at a team which has scored six goals in its last two games? The neutrals might be rooting for Spain in the final on Sunday but Germany are easily capable of beating them. Klose and Podolski are a  strike pairing which has been at least as productive as Spain's much-drooled over Villa and Torres, and they have perhaps the tournament's best midfielder in Michael Ballack.

So, come Sunday, don't expect me to be cheering for Spain. I'll be in the minority, hoping Germany do it. Maybe then they'll get a bit of respect, finally.

Ah Euro 2008 it turned out to be more fun that we expected. To place the final bets check out Bodog's Euro 2008 odds.
