Beware A Trier!
Two weeks ago I paid a painter 220 quid in advance to paint the front of my house. He started it and then naffed off leaving the job half done. I´m not sure what´s worse. Being stuck with a half painted house or the feeling that he has played me for a fool. I paid this bloke in good faith and he let me down.
There is a parallel to be drawn between my experience with the painter and having what I would term a bad bet. I backed a golfer to win his three-ball a couple of weeks ago. Monitoring his progress on the internet I noted that he started his round by bogeying the opening par 5 that his two playing partners each birdied.
Poor start but not to worry as there´s another 17 holes to go. My man then double bogeyed the second hole. Seriously up against it now I thought as his opponents both made par.
The writing was well and truly on the wall by the time he treble-bogeyed the third and bogeyed the fourth. It was clear that after getting off to a poor start he wasn´t taking it seriously. No professional should be seven over after four holes. He had chucked the towel in, just like my painter did and I didn´t get a run for my money.
We can stomach a losing bet if we see the man, woman, horse, dog, team or hamster we back trying their best, you can´t really ask for any more from them than that.
But to not get a run for your money, whether it be from a painter or a player, is a real sickener.
