Never Mind The Welsh Bird… Here's Johnny!
Welsh songbird and Dusty Springfield tribute act Duffy was left in tears at the MOJO Honours List Awards last night. No, it wasn't another failed attempt by Gavin and Stacey star James Cordon to chat her up it was Bodog's favourite hell raising punk, the ubiquitous and occasionally snarling Johnny Rotten.
Whether Duffy had been taking full advantage of the free booze at the event is unclear but Duffy thought that hugging Johnny from behind as he was having a backstage chat would be a great idea. Unfortunately Johnny obviously doesn't take to kindly to being manhandled by attractive blonde singers and promptly broke off the conversation to snarl, "You don't do that to me."
Quite, Beat is probably not alone in thinking that the first thing we'd do if we ever met Johnny is to give him a little cuddle from behind. Duffy apparently broke down in tears and did a runner, sensitive soul that she is. Whether she jumped in a cab and bawled her way to Warwick Avenue is unconfirmed.
Reports vary depending on what newspaper you choose to read. According to Metro, the veteran punk singer heckled Duffy throughout the awards ceremony.
"He seemed unhappy a popstar was picking up an award at a traditionally rock event," said a source. I guess he does have a point, we can't imagine Johnny picking up a gong at the MOBO's.
An awards official pointed out to Johnny that he had just bawled out a rising young star (brave man) Johnny pleaded ignorance, "I screamed at her because I didn't realise she was famous."
But Duffy shouldn't feel too bad about her run in with the Sex Pistol. She got off quite lightly compared to the other winners. Collecting his Icon Award Britain's cuddliest punk sneered, spat and snarled, "You're all cowards. Look around at what Britain is becoming…….All I see in this room is just a bunch of mellow p*** wipes. What we did in the Sex Pistols had integrity. Celebrate the Pistols, We are what made Britain great. I accept this award on the Pistol's behalf, you f*****."
In true punk fashion he then hurled the mic to the ground.
Somehow we can't ever see an acceptance speech like that from Chris Martin so Johnny, all at Beat Towers salute you. Modfather Paul Weller did get a hug from Johnny.
