Oooohhh. Talk about hitting the cross bar. Followers of the Beat UK´s football tipsters came within a whisker of a tasty odds against upset as Czech Republic so nearly beat impotent England at Wembley.

It took a scrappy late injury time goal from Joe Cole to salvage a draw for England and deny us what looked like a guaranteed whopping 77/20 pay out. The Indian banquet at the Star of Bengal where we had planned to spend the winnings is now on hold.

But fear not, we´ve already got our heads in the form book for this weekend and are determined to dig out plenty more winners. We´ll be going crazy about jalfrezi on Saturday night.

Possibly inspired by all the hand clapping and anthem playing currently taking place in Beijing, the think-tank at the EPT has decided to have an award ceremony just before its new season flops off in Barcelona.

On September 9, at the Barcelona lounge called the Opium Mar, seven trinkets of community appreciation will be handed to players who offered great individual performances from EPT season IV.

The ceremony will be a curtain raiser to season V but it also offers an opportunity for the poker community to give something back to those pros that have selfishly manufactured an egotistical attitude just so they can give us watching railbirds some fine entertainment.

Fabio Capello must have been impressed with what he saw at Wembley last night. Fluid movement, slick passing, gifted individuals, a polished team performance. Still, enough about the Czech Republic, and onto the shambles that was England.

Let’s hope the penny drops with Don Fabio soon. The reason England did not qualify for Euro 2008 was not purely down to Steve McClaren’s coaching. No, it was also because half of McClaren’s team are simply not up to the job of winning at international level, and no amount of tactical guile from Capello can disguise that fact.
