Mike Caro’s nickname as ‘The Mad Genius of Poker’ is well chosen.

Resembling a cross between Sigmund Freud and Dr Emmett Brown from the Back to the Future trilogy, if someone told you that he could travel back in time to find out why you grasp your earlobes in times of stress, you would nod your head.

Luckily for us mortals of the felt, Caro is now more famous as a leading poker ‘theorist’ and seems happier playing with statistical tables. To this end, he founded the ‘Mike Caro University of Poker, Gambling and Life Strategy’ and was one of a handful of individuals who believed online poker could be a money-spinner.

It’s dog eat dog in the Premier League these days, where the modern day transfer market seems to resemble a school playground more and more with every passing year. Take this summer – that nasty bully Real Madrid has been picking on poor Manchester United, trying to get them to sell star player Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, a little lower down the playground pecking order, United have started their own bullying campaign, pushing poor Tottenham around and demanding their dinner money…er, their star player, Dimitar Berbatov.

United wanted the Bulgarian a year ago, didn’t happen, and Spurs fans were ‘treated’ to the sight of Berbatov sulking and moping around for the first part of the season until he got his act together. …

For Dwain Chambers, the Olympic dream is all over. There was never any other way this story was going to end, and today’s decision not to overturn his lifetime Olympics ban will surprise no-one. The sprinter – who tested positive for the steroid THG in 2003 – has been competing again in athletics meets and has been in impressive form; in terms of times, he’s the best 100m runner in the country.

Did you see that wind and rain at Royal Birkdale? Now that´s proper golf. The game should be all about battling the elements as well as your competitors and when the forces of nature come into play it gives us punters a real chance.

That´s because most odds compilers base their assessment of each player´s chances of winning on his or her skills or talent. Not the weather. Odds compilers have so many players to price up individually that it often makes it logistically impossible for them alter their odds on the basis that the weather will be bad.

Over 150 players are competing at Birkdale this week and odds compilers simply don´t have the time to change prices as the weather alters throughout a day´s play. …
