One of the less documented reasons to play at the WPT at The Bellagio is for the chance to expand your waistline as well as your bank balance. Every day, players fight for a year’s supply of almonds, the tasty snack that is subject to identity confusion because although it is botanically a fruit, it is usually packed off as nuts.

Tuesday’s lucky winner was Gus Hansen and yesterday saw Steve Wong embrace the wasabi & soy sauce flavour treats simply for being ‘fan of the day’. It was great fun watching Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso last season. Even though they had the same badge on their overalls and drove the same cars, it was obvious they couldn’t stand each other. Things got worse as the season progressed – it was like seeing a showbiz marriage collapse in front of the paparazzi.

This season, with Alonso officially on a different team (rather than just acting as if he was on a different team), we all expected sparks to fly between the two rivals. So far they haven’t, but things are quietly beginning to rumble between the pair and the fact that this weekend’s race is in Spain may just crank up the tension a notch.
