Bryan Robson Given the Boot

So Bryan Robson has been given the boot as Sheffield United Manager. His chat yesterday with chairmen Terry Robinson and Kevin McCabe didn’t bode too well. But it’s not really going to come as a shock to anyone as the club is short of money and fans and bigwigs alike have been screaming out for a miracle. But being 7 points clear of the relegation zone isn’t going to give anyone a good night’s sleep.

Robson’s been at the helm since May after Sheffield United got relegated at the end of last season, but winning 9 out of 32 fixtures is not encouraging. We had a bit of a discussion about this …

Ireland Do 'An England'

Giovanni Trapattoni is the latest in the British penchant for Italian coaches. (AP Images)

Italian coaches are this season’s must-have football accessory, it seems. Just a few months after England replaced Steve McClaren with Fabio Capello, the Republic of Ireland have turned to Italy for their successor to Steve Staunton. In an copycat move, the FAI have signed up Giovanni Trapattoni.

Trap’s not too far behind Fabio in terms of coaching credentials, and he’s got a pretty impressive track record. Whereas Staunton had barely seen or done anything in football management before becoming Ireland coach, Trapattoni has seen and done the lot. At 68, he’s certainly got the experience, and six Serie A titles with Juventus (plus another with Inter Milan) …

Shock Horror: Opposition to Global Premier League Plans

Will peddling the Premier League around the globe really work? (iStockphoto)

It’s not really going to come as a shock to anyone but the news in recent weeks that the plans for the Premier League to be taken to the major cities around the globe, is facing some opposition. We can’t think why a ludicrous idea like this would even be considered in the first place. Anyway some smarty pants at the Premier League (chief exec Richard Scudamore – we don’t mind naming and shaming!) thought it would be a great way to globalise football and means that a 39th round of games would be played from January 2011.

The latest opponent to the hair brained scheme is the Asian Football Confederation …

Leg 2 GUKPT

What will Valentine’s Day hold in store for the GUKPT? (iStockphoto)

Opinion seems unclear as to the exact origin of the cliché ‘lucky at cards, unlucky in love’. Some say it’s a Danish proverb, others argue it stems from England, whilst one or two argue they heard it from the lips of a wistful grandparent after a game of gin rummy and one too many rum ‘n blacks.

Whatever its derivation, today may see a few poker players in Walsall testing its wisdom. The town is hosting the 2nd Leg of the GUKPT and what better way to cement a relationship with a loved one than to stump up the £1,060 buy-in for the tour’s main event?

Starting at 3pm, sad singletons may …

Love Is In the Air

New Man Gets Wood For Amy (AP Images)

Britain’s favourite lollipop head and crack-hating singer songwriter Amy Winehouse has fallen in love again. We wonder what happened to “maaaaahhhhhh Blake,” well it looks like he’s out of sight out of mind. Whilst doing porridge, hubby is gonna be playing second fiddle to the new man in Wino’s life. And guess what the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree because he’s also called Blake.

Imaginative lass is our Amy, anyway she’s been slow-dancing and being all lovey-dovey with Blake Wood at fashion designer Andrew Buckler’s party at trendy East London club Shoreditch House. Witnesses to the public displays of affection told The Sun Newspaper that the two “looked like a young …

Bodog’s Johnathan "UFPokerStar" Westra has won event no. 8 at the Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza. Westra took event no. 6’s No Limit Holdem with its $540 buy-in and walked away with a rather hefty $59,537 first-place prize at the preliminary event at the Venetian. It seems that the online poker pro is having a really good year so far especially if we combine this with his win last month in the WSOP Circuit preliminary event.

No doubt Westra will be hoping to make a big dent in the WSOP events coming up later in the year.

If you fancy your chances at taking part in …
